The City of Berne Police Department is Located in North East Indiana, just South of Fort Wayne. Berne is a small city in Adams County, with a population of about 4500.  The Berne Police Department is 1 of 5 Law Enforcement agencies in Adams County. The Department has a Full Time Chief, two Lieutenant’s, one of which is the Department Detective, one Sergeant, three 1st Class Patrolmen, five Reserve Officers and a full time secretary.  The City does not have it's own Jail, so the department transports all subjects, who require to be jailed to the Adams County Sheriff's Department Jail in Decatur, Indiana. When a subject is taken into custody, by an Officer of the Berne Police Department, and does not require a trip to the Jail, those subjects are brought to the Department and then released or released at the scene.

The City of Berne does not have it's own City Court System. All Offenses are Prosecuted by the Adams County Prosecutor, at the County Courthouse in Decatur, Indiana. In some cases, the City Attorney will provide assistance in Local Ordinance violations.

In 2007 the City of Berne Police Department moved to a brand new building located at 1160 W Main Street. The new building not only houses the Berne Police Department, but the Adams County EMS, and an Office for the Adams County Probation Department. The City Building is still located at 158 Franklin Street. The Mayors Office, Clerk/ Treasurer's Office and the City Council use this building as their headquarters. This building was built in 1964. The City of Berne Office Hours is Monday- Friday: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
